I invented the term in 2013, and Daniel Larimer came up with DACs (s/organization/corporation) a few months before. Of course the concept of decentralized automatons is older; my DAO ideas were in part inspired by Daniel Suarez’s Daemon. That said, I don’t think calling “the DAO” a “slap in the face” is remotely appropriate despite its faults; it’s much easier to conceptualize something and armchair-criticize others than it is to implement it yourself.
