There is something to be said of the distinctions we make with regards to objective research. Does it make sense to parse data on gender where the determining factor is made by how the person self-identifies? Possibly. It could be harmful to include trans-women with women on cervical cancer studies. It could be harmful to include trans-women with men on behavioral studies. It is interesting that anyone would feel so strongly about committing to one definition or another when flexibility serves humanity much better.
