This narrative is quite stark when compared with my own experience. I’ve attend four universities and haven’t encountered such a violent environment. Quite the contrary, whenever groups I’ve worked with or myself had a problem with something — the administrators and staff were amenable. Still, our successes had a lot to do with being persistent and harboring the attitude of trailblazers. The narrative here presents an environment where it is impossible to succeed because of malevolent institutional forces. It is interesting that in recognizing a problem with the recruitment of marginalized students (rather than privileged ones) that the author would choose to abandon the institution rather than shape it in a more desirable direction.
