Mascaras de México (1/27)
Back in 2009, I created woodcut prints for the first time. This is a small detail from one of my favorite pieces — a large poster illustrating 26 Mexican masks originating from various regions of the republic.
The project helped me explore technical aspects of the woodcut printing process, which I had been drawn to because of its use in Mexican art throughout its history, by greats such as Jose Guadalupe Posada and Leopoldo Mendez.
It also taught me that carving type and letters in wood is very difficult, hence the jagged letters.
I will be sharing one mask illustration every day starting tomorrow, along with some information regarding source and inspiration. Enjoy!
