Come Valentines day, it is hard to find the right gift. We get bombarded by things we should by, from flowers to stuffed teddy bears, chocolates, to jewelry, and even lingerie. It is the on day we are supposed to go out of our way to be romantic and for so many it just seems like too much pressure. Then I came across a little known white wine from Argentina. A wine that summed up everything I wanted to say about love, about life, and about sharing incredible moments with someone. In Torrontes, I found the most romantic expression ever in a white wine.

Where the hell did this wine come from? It seemed so odd, so rare, and yet so perfect. It was as if I had found a diamond worthy of bearing my soul, and expressing the infinite unity in offering it to my soul’s counterpart. And there it was, hidden on a shelf amongst hundreds of Chardonnays, Rieslings, and Sauvignon Blanc. Something that immediately caught the eye, but if I had passed by a hundred times would have been lost amongst the chaos. I had no idea what I was getting into, but something seemed right.

As soon as I opened up my first bottle of Torrontes (I ended up drinking seven on a visit to South America) it hit me. Torrontes hits you like a bouquet of flowers thrown straight at your face, smelling of roses, and geranium. Screaming romance from the very first breath. The high altitudes of Salta in Argentina where the best Torrontes comes from, make for some lightly zesty, faintly dry, and subtle fruit flavors. It is as light a white wine as they come, but the aroma more than makes up for it. A perfect wine to hit the beach with, to cool off with. It came as an awesome bonus that after years of searching for the perfect pairing to Peruvian Ceviche, I found that perfect accompaniment in Torrontes.

Torrontes is a wine you could drink all day long, and feel like you are having the time of your life. You laugh a little, you dance a little, and at the end of the day you just relax and go with the flow. And the more the Torrontes flows, the happier you will be.
