Andrew Jackson was seen in popular imagination as having championed the common man and the down trodden. He also freed himself from poverty.

Whether or not this reputation is earned is debatable, but what isn’t is how Jackson was a near mythological figure to people, whose name stirred interest at least.

Perhaps emancipate wasn’t the right word to use. Freedman more likely took popular names, but no one can know each individual reason for the decision the former slave made for his/her name.
