The very almost — Otkritie Bank.

For some projects, they never quite make it to development. It’s something that’s always hard to accept — but a necessary component of our ever-evolving industry. Occasionally we can be left scratching our heads, and it can be a real shame, because sometimes these ideas are some of our best.

Sometimes, it’s simply out of our hands. A trait that can be common practice when working with larger organisations.

To be completely honest, everything was actually going really smoothly. But unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, when working with large organisations, more often than not, there tends to be somebody who pulls the pin or decides well, in our case “Oh, well, we actually don’t really need this right now”.

It was a difficult pill to swallow because at the end of the day, we want to see our designs out in the community — making a positive impact.

Now, let’s get into it.

About the client

Otkritie bank is one of the largest and well known banks across Russia. (A big task, we know)

From the get go, we knew it was going to be a meticulous challenge — that being:

1. They have an already well established brand across Russia.
2. Significant changes could be negative.
3. We wanted to take what is currently working well, and breathe some new life into it. Kind of a “refresher”, so to speak.

At that time, Otkritie were set to launch a new ecosystem of tools:

Essentially, they wanted us to create an updated & seamless branding option for their new set of Open Hub platform(s) — including options for the Open Hub Store, Business & Club.

The newly revitalised branding options had to be unique, but still make a distinct connection with the banks ethos and existing customer base.

So, we took their current branding concept, and used it as a guide that helped paved the way for a fresh take on this new neighbouring ecosystem of services.

We also created a few graphics that were to be used as part of a video about the new open hub services, as you can see below with the following screenshots.

Process

We started with our own unique branding take for the Open Hub, and then slowly adapted it to the existing branding which the community are already so well adept to.

By doing this, we helped achieve the level of cohesion that was needed. This is how we helped develop their ideals about a whole new otkritie bank eco system of tools.

Regardless of the final situation, and after being told on countless occasions how great the work was — it still feels like a loss.

The one that got away.

In the end, we like to look back on it with positivity, as we truly believe the work speaks for itself. We still feel a little hard done by, as there was never any real concrete reason for pulling the projects proverbial pin.

Nonetheless, this was our ever so “nearly” Okritie bank branding concept. We hope you’ve enjoyed the read!
