Thanks for pointing out the obvious Andrew Boddicker. While this author calls accepting the very obvious fact that the Civil War was about slavery “intellectually lazy,” he goes on to jump through the same hoops many others who would rewrite history do in order to absolve the south of America’s original sin. Yes, economic concerns, tariffs, etc, were part of the calculus leading to the Civil War, but at the end of the day there is and was only one central issue: the issue of human slavery. Attempting to understand the complexity of the situation is important, no doubt, but trying to make the war about something less than slavery is both intellectually dishonest and further divides a nation that has never even attempted to truly address the wounds of slavery.
