A Weather Geeks Episode Hard To Explain But You’ll Be Glad You Watched…
By: Dr. Marshall Shepherd

Dr. Travis Taylor is a fascinating guy so I can see why he has his own new show 3 Scientists Walk Into A Bar (Link) debuting on The Weather Channel on May 31st. Look at this description:
-Grew up in the heart of Dixie Alley in northern Alabama
-holds 3 masters degrees and 2 phd degrees (in astrophysics, engineering, etc.)
-wrote 16 sci -fi novels
-worked for NASA
-has a black belt
-is a Pilot
-lead singer for for several rock bands

At first when we talked about having him on, I was a little worried that it didn’t really fit what we try to do at WxGeeks and that we would be seen as just doing cross promotion. Remember, we value WxGeeks as a community resource rather than just a Weather Channel show.
Don’t worry, WxGeek fans, this show is amazing and it is a perfect fit because Travis is a super weather geek. I spend the show talking about massive weather experiments that he does on his show including:
1. Designing an interactive, gym sized tornado machine.
2. Using a gigantic Tesla coil and bulbs to describe lightning.
3. Using geography, physics, and a bunch of fireworks to test the well-known saying that 5 seconds between flash and thunder equals a mile.

We discuss them, and you might be surprised at what he finds. We also discuss how another element of weather that you probably haven’t heard about affected the NASA Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. And in one of the more interesting WxGeeks discussions, we talk about Travis’ theory on the continuous lightning storms of Venezuala and his experiences with South’s version of tornado alley. Travis also provides the perfect “aerospace engineer” explanation for why you shouldn’t get under an overpass during a tornado. You have to hear it….
After we taped this show, everyone in production was remarking (including me) about how good that show felt. It is hard to explain why, but I would recommend checking this one out. Travis’ personality is as big as his “to do” list, and some of the things that we show will make you say “wow”.
Trust me on this one folks. It is a legitimate show and not a big commercial for his show.
