The Toll Love Took

Crimson horizons blending with dew-sprinkled mornings,

Singing my soldier to sleep in a smoky twilight,

Kissing away tears as you cry yourself to sleep,

Never will those full evergreen eyes open again,

The cold shard of metal made a home in your heart,

And the loss made a hole in mine.

Never will the sun filter through our laughter or sunburn our promises again.

I will sleep in pools of cold tears,

Until I, too, am gone.
