Week 12 at General Assembly
It’s all over!!
So I have reached the end of what was a cosmic and epic journey into the coding world of General Assembly’s coding bootcamp. Im mentally and physically drained and exhausted but my god was it worth it! I have learned so much in my time here and in the space of only 3 months that would have taken at least a full year for me to learn on my own. From Sinatra to Rails to Javascript to Angular and beyond we both covered and moved begrudgingly onward deeper into each language and framework.
Saying all that, I still do feel very much like this is just the tip of the iceberg. Every framework we learned could command 3 months on its own easily to fully digest, but i’m happy that I stuck to the pace breezing through the curriculum. At this point having a good amount exposure to multiple frameworks rather than a specialized focus on one makes me feel well rounded, stronger and confident enough to pick up new technologies and work with them on the fly as an entry level/junior developer. There are definately things out there that i’m dying to try out, things like Meteor, Node etc…, (i’m basically getting more and more obsessed with javascript and front end frameworks each day!!), but the real money here is learning how to learn something a lot of the people in the cohort fully embraced and practiced and something that is invaluable in the long run as a developer.
I often told many of my classmates that the one greatest thing that got me through all of my troubles working with code and tough problems was to never feel intimidated by them. To always feel like I have a start, a strategy and a plan to attack them. Even when I was way off the mark, It was that persistent spirit that allowed me to make each major breakthrough. Thats the same mentality I bring to learning new technologies and frameworks. Its always going to be a challenge but the reward is sweeter when you put in the time and effort to learn a new skill, it only makes you much more valuable and knowledgable at your craft.
