Date set for 2017 Sports Announcing Camp with Lanny Frattare
The Waynesburg University Department of Communication just released the dates for its one-of-a-kind summer Announcing Camp for summer 2017. The camp will be held the week of June 12, for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in sports broadcasting or sports journalism.
Richard Krause, chair of the Department of Communication, said the Announcing Camp has been a game-changer for the department, convincing the majority of attendees of Waynesburg’s superior communication curriculum.
“This Announcing Camp is the most successful recruiting tool that we have,” said Krause.
The five-day camp offers a “balance of practical experience, classroom theory, and fun activity,” according to Instructor of Communication Lanny Frattare, who designs and facilitates camp activities each year.
Frattare, former voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates and owning more than 30 years of announcing experience, said that the camp is colossally beneficial, even for those not interested in pursuing sports.
“I strongly believe that anyone interested in a career in communication should strongly consider the effectiveness of the practical experience that is a part of this camp,” said Frattare.
Frattare said this experience is one of the most exciting offered to high school students by the Department of Communication, because it is important for potential communication students to discover their talents and strengths, as well as to find out where their interest lies.
“To develop talent, you have to practice,” he said. “You have to hone your skills, and we’re opening those doors to students, making them aware of those skills and how they’re important.”
