Unless you try, you wouldn’t know what is coming your way. It is the interpretation that stops us from taking chances, and one of these chances is applying for a scholarship.
There is a myth in everybody’s minds about Masters Scholarships being rigidly circled around the best out of the best students which is not true. Most of the times, masters scholarships are awarded as per the application presentation, knowledge of the interested field and, of course, financial background; and many deserving students fail to see their own potential and avoid applying for one.
If you have completed or are currently pursuing your Bachelor’s, you would be pleased to know there are numerous international master scholarships that you cannot miss. Here is a list of some popular Masters Scholarships from around the globe that you must know and apply for.
International Masters Scholarships For Indian Students
In America:
1. Fullbright-Nehru Fellowship (USA)
In the honour of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the United States-India Education Foundation (USIEF) offers the Fullbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships that help meritorious Indian students to study in select US universities by funding their tuition, living, travel and other costs along with visa support.
Eligibility: To be eligible for the fellowship, students must have scored at least 55% in a four-year bachelor’s degree equivalent to a US bachelor’s degree (or a master’s degree) from a recognized Indian University. Added to that, the students must also have a minimum of three years of full-time professional work experience applicable to their intended study program.
Areas of Study: Preference is given to the students interested in Arts and Culture Management including Heritage Conservation and Museum Studies, Economics, Environmental Science/Studies, Higher Education Administration, International Affairs, International Legal Studies, Public Administration, Public Health, Urban and Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies/ Gender Studies.
Duration: The Fullbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship provides funding for a maximum of two years. The funding includes tuition fees, accommodation and travel expenses, accident and sickness coverage and J-1 visa assistance.
How to Apply: Online applications open in May and interested students need to complete and submit their forms as per FNMaster’s Application Instructions and FNMaster’s Application Checklist. Along with the form, the required documents are CV, academic degree and mark sheets, language test scores, letter of invitation, passport, FDNR Annexure Form and FDNR Endorsement Form (if applicable).

2. Stanford Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship (USA)
With about 80% of financial support in tuition and other fees, the Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship by Reliance Industries Ltd. is dedicated to building an attainable place for deserving Indian students who wish to obtain a two-year MBA program from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, US.
Eligibility: Students enrolling for an MBA degree from Stanford GSB can apply for the scholarship. Though, all the fellows granted the scholarship must return to and live in India and work for a minimum of two years in an Indian organization at least four years after the program completion.
Number of Seats: 50 students get the benefit of financial support from the Reliance and Stanford.
Duration: The Stanford Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship grants almost 80% of fees concession in the tuition and other fees each year for the two-year MBA degree.
How to Apply: The online application forms open in April and the interested students need to complete the details and attach their mark sheets of class 10 and 12, JEE/CAT grade records, GMAT/GRE scores, CV, employment history, an essay of 250 words and individual financial information.

3. Lester B. Pearson Scholarship (Canada)
The University of Toronto awards the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program every year in the honour of Canada’s greatest Prime Minister and the only Canadian who won the Nobel Prize for Peace. The Scholarship funds tuition fees, books, incidental fees and accommodation support of about 37 international students for four years.
Eligibility: Any non-Canadian student who has graduated either in the current year or the previous year of admission at the University of Toronto for a master’s degree is eligible to apply for the scholarship. The candidates need to apply for the scholarship while they begin their studies at the university, and already enrolled in the previous years will not be considered for application.
Number of Seats: Approximately 37 students benefit the financial aid of the scholarship.
Duration: The Lester B. Pearson Scholarship funds tuition fees, books, incidental fees and accommodation support for selected international students for a maximum of four years of study.
How to Apply: Students need to obtain a nomination from their undergraduate college and apply at the University of Toronto for the master’s degree they wish for after which they need to apply online for the scholarship in January prior to their program commencement.

In Europe:
1. DAAD Scholarship (Germany)
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides numerous scholarships to Indian students that cover almost all expenses from monthly rents to German language course and travel expenses in select institutes and courses.
Eligibility: Students with a minimum of 8.5 CGPA in their graduation and proficiency in the English language are eligible for all DAAD Masters Scholarships. However, they must have enrolled in a full-time master program in Germany and must meet all the requirements of the program eligibility criteria.
Areas of Study: DAAD Masters Scholarships are available for Engineering, Language and Cultural Studies, Law, Economics and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine/Agriculture, Forestry and Nutritional Science, and Art, Music and Sport.
Duration: All DAAD Scholarships differ in funding duration according to subject and requirements. On average, they finance 10 to 24 months of master studies, covering monthly payments, travel expenses, health, accident and personal liability insurance, one-off study expense and monthly rent for accommodation.
How to Apply: To apply for the scholarship, students need to register at the DAAD portal, obtain a complete reference from their referee, complete all the required details and documents in the application either in German or English (otherwise translate them into either of these).

2. British Council GREAT Scholarship (UK)
As a tied-up with the Government of the United Kingdom’s GREAT Britain Campaign, the British Council offers a total of 35 undergraduate and masters scholarships for Indian Students who wish to enroll into any of the courses of study in the UK.
Eligibility: To be eligible for the GREAT Scholarship, the candidate must be an Indian resident and must have completed their secondary education in India. Along with this, they must have availed the admission offer from the University they applied to before they apply for the scholarship. Like any other scholarship, excellence in academics, extracurricular and expertise personal qualities in a student are a plus.
Areas of Study: The masters scholarships is offered to the students of Art (visual and creative), Biological Sciences/Life Sciences, Climate Change, Sustainability and Environmental Science, Conflict Resolution/Peace Studies, Education, Engineering and Technology, Gender Studies and Ageing, Human Rights, Humanities, Math, Statistics and Data Sciences, Natural and Physical Sciences, Public Administration, Governance and Social Policy, Public Health and Behavioural Science, Social Sciences and Developmental Studies, Urban Planning and Infrastructure Development.
Duration: The GREAT scholars will benefit full tuition fee for the first year of their study in any UK university, but will have to bear the transportation, accommodation and other expenses on their own.
How to Apply: After checking and ensuring the required course and University falls under the list of GREAT UG Scholarship, the student needs to register at the University and Colleges Admission Services (UCAS) website and fill-up the form with all the necessary documents. The required documents to be attached would be a valid Indian passport, mark sheet of senior secondary and other related certificates, English Language Proficiency Certificate and other documents required as per the course and University applied to.

3. Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship (UK)
Funded by the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission, the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan awards promising students from Commonwealth nations who can contribute to the betterment of their home country post their study program from any university in the UK.
Eligibility: The student must be a permanent resident of India and must have financial incapability to fund their study in the United Kingdom without any aid. The students need to be enrolled in only one year Master’s program, and should have scored a minimum of 60% in their Bachelor’s (if in Humanities and Social Sciences) and a minimum of 65% (if in Medical, Engineering and Technology, Science and Agriculture.
Areas of Study: The scholarship is available to the students of Engineering and Technology, Pure and Applied Sciences, Agriculture, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Duration: The selected candidates benefit tuition fees, travel and accommodation expenses and adequate maintenance for one year Master’s program only.
How to Apply: To apply for the scholarship, the candidates need to apply at both MHRD Portal and CSC Online Application System before the deadline in October. The required documents to be attached are proof of citizenship, all certificates and mark sheets of higher education qualifications and directly submitted references by two referees.

4. Oxford and Cambridge Society of India (UK)
The Oxford and Cambridge Society of India is a non-profit alumni organization that offers part-cost masters scholarships for Indian students to be able to afford the heavy educational expenditure of the two top institutions of Britain, i.e. Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Eligibility: Candidates must be Indian students, in terms of residence and graduation, and not more than 30 years of age as on 1st September of the year of the grant. Application for the scholarship can only be made after enrolling in a full-time postgraduate course via normal admission process in either the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge.
Benefits:
- Along with monetary sum, scholar gets a letter of support from the OCSI for other scholarship awarding bodies.
- Based on scholarship letter, OCSI assures assistance in obtaining a fast-tracked education loan from an Indian financial institution, with automatic loan qualification-status from a leading financial institution.
- The scholar gets a complimentary life membership of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of India.
- Mentorship, guidance and support by an OCSI member regarding the accommodation at the university abroad.
- OCSI shall assist the scholar in returning to India and reintegrating in the professional environment in the country.
Number of Seats: With a varying amount of grant each year, the masters scholarships are distributed as follows:
- OCSI Scholarship(s) worth ₹3, 00,000 tenable at either the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge.
- One scholarship worth ₹3,00,000 tenable at One scholarship worth ₹1,00,000 tenable only at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, from Emmanuel College Cambridge Trust, India.
- One scholarship worth ₹1, 00,000 tenable only at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford, from Ritika Dhamija.
How to Apply: The scholarship applications open in February every year, whereas the funding awards are announced in June/July followed by interview sessions.

In Asia:
1. Young Leader’s Program Student Scholarship (Japan)
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology of the Government of Japan, offers scholarships to international students to undertake master’s degree in Japan.
Eligibility: The student must be a resident of a country eligible for the program and should have a Bachelor’s degree along with three to five years of full-time work experience in public administration. Apart from this, he/she must not be more than 40 years of age as on 2nd October of the year of application.
Areas of Study: Young Leader’s Program Student Scholarship is offered to students of Public Administration, Local Governance, Law and Business Administration.
Number of Seats: About 6 students are regarded as the winners of the scholarship every year.
Duration: The scholarship funds only one year master’s degree where the students receive a monthly stipend of ¥2, 42,000 along with living and travel expenses, though they will have to bear the tuition fees themselves.
How to Apply: The application forms open in August/September and all forms must be clearly filled and submitted along with candidate’s photographs, official transcripts and certificates of Bachelor’s, recommendation from university professor, recommending authority and superior at the workplace, health certificate, study plan, motivation letter and CV, answers to all essay questions provided, copy of passport, citizenship proof, certificate for English language proficiency and an essay with detailed aspiration and future plans post-program.
