The global pandemic has brought the world to a standstill. Academic opportunities all around the globe have been withdrawn due to the same, but this doesn’t mean that there are no opportunities to make use of this lockdown!
We at Precisely, have come up with our very own series of live Q/A sessions, with mentors from all around the globe, and across different domains.
Precisely hosted their very first #MentorAnswersItAll with Daniel Bill Opio.
The following article is the crux of the entire webinar, which lasted for over an hour.
Daniel is the CEO of AddSecurity, a cybersecurity expert and a research fellow with a German foundation in Cybersecurity.
The majority of Daniel’s talk revolved around tips, advice for budding entrepreneurs, and small businesses.
The current lockdown has made it tough for a lot of businesses to continue running as some of the major companies rely on offline activities more than their online ones. AddSecurity is a cybersecurity startup, and Daniel has been utilizing the time to find new clients, and rethink his business strategies.
As a founder of a newly started business, Daniel recommends similar startups to focus more on creating value through their product, by making the potential client recognize that they require such service. A sneak peek into what Daniel does, is that he visits some of the major websites in Uganda, analyzes the websites, looking for security flaws which he uses to develop a detailed report. These reports create a sense of urgency in the potential client by exhibiting the flaws that could potentially hamper their entire businesses!
Networking is one of the prime skills an entrepreneur needs. Daniel has been working with a Canadian company, which he met through an international workshop he attended. In his own words,
“Try to pitch yourself to new people. When you see someone who looks like a potential client, go to them, and pitch your business.”
Self branding is another skill that an entrepreneur needs. A business needs to make their presence known, and Daniel does this by making use of an online platform — Twitter. Twitter is a platform that lets you interact with people beyond your own circle. Blogs are important for a start-up, as it does two jobs at once — creating a digital footprint, and creating online presence.
During the session, one of our attendees asked the following question,
“What should I do when I’m applying for a summer internship? What can I do to build my skills during this lockdown?”
When applying for an internship, Daniel recommends researching thoroughly about the company, the role one is applying to and think of what is something new that you can bring to the table. “Researching similar entities can help,” Daniel suggests.
“I personally have been reading books about Cybersecurity,” Daniel added.
Cybersecurity is the primary domain Daniel works in, and therefore, to expand his knowledge in the following field is necessary for him to keep up with other similar startups or companies.
International opportunities are abundant, but there is no medium to link the student communities to these opportunities. We, at Precisely act as this medium, by listing some of the best international opportunities like workshops, fellowships and conferences on our platform.
