5 Ways to Boost your Self Esteem
One of the main reasons some people suffer from mental health problems is a low self-esteem, this meaning a lack of confidence in your own abilities. This is quite a big problem amongst a lot of young people, however there is a difference between being shy and having a low self-esteem. Common phrases that people with a low self-esteem say are things like, ‘I can’t do that,’ ‘I don’t want to do that’ and simply just saying ‘no’ to things because they don’t think they are capable of doing it. You get the idea, so here are 5 ways to boost your self-esteem!
1. Do things you love more often
If you love doing something, which could be anything by the way, doing it more often is a neat way to increase your self-esteem and confidence. It can be a good reminder that you are good at something and the enjoyment that you get out of it can make you a lot happier. So you might as well do it more often!
2. Talk to people about it
Talking to people about anything in general is a good way to get things off your chest, feel at ease and be healthier. If you aren’t confident about doing something, talking to someone about it is a really good way to gain confidence. Often you will get some encouragement, advice and guidance to help you through things, so don’t be afraid to talk to people about it. It could be your parent, sibling, friend, anyone that you know could help in different ways.
3. Start to challenge negative thoughts
If you think negatively about yourself a lot, ask yourself why. If there is a valid reason for why you might think in a certain way then fair enough, but if not, you’ll stop. You’ll stop simply because you have no reason to think negatively anymore. For example, if you say you’re rubbish at running and you have never tried it, how do you know you are rubbish if you’ve never tried? You will be more likely to stop thinking negatively when you challenge the negativity!
4. Remind yourself of your strengths
Everybody has strengths and weaknesses. It’s a fact of life. If you have a low self-esteem, reminding yourself what you are good at is a useful way to show that you do have the ability to do things. For example, you might be good at writing, and if you are reminded of this constantly, you will be more confident if someone asked you to write a piece of work for them. This can be applied to anything really.
5. Write down the good stuff you did that day
Creating a simple list is a good way to highlight to yourself that you wasn’t useless that day. Even simple things like ‘I made a great tea’ or ‘I got a lot of work done today,’ are great ways to show off what you have achieved that day, which should make you feel a lot more positive.
