Hero: Tyr

Tyr, the Norse pantheon’s one-armed god, was a member of the Aesir tribe who represented war and bloodshed. He was also known, somewhat paradoxically, as a bringer of justice and order.

Attributes

Tyr was more than a fearless warrior; he was also a wise advisor and a champion of justice.

Tyr’s most distinguishing feature was his missing right hand (or arm), which was usually severed at the wrist or forearm. Fenrir, the ravenous huge wolf born by Loki and the jötunn Angrboda, had swallowed this missing limb. Later in Ragnarök, Fenrir would play an essential part.

Family

Tyr was either the son of Odin, the “All Father” and God-king, or Hymir, a giant from the (the “Lay of Hymir”) part of the Poetic Edda. He is the One-Handed God, Wolf Fosterer, God of Battles, and Odin’s Son.’ Tyr was a half-sibling to the chief members of the Aesir tribe because he was Odin’s son.

Story

Tyr and the Kettle of Giants

The story revolved around Thor’s pursuit for a legendary kettle large enough to brew massive amounts of ale. Tyr claimed that the kettle belongs to Hymir, a giant who Tyr claimed to be his father.

When the two gods arrived to Hymir’s residence, they discovered that the giant was absent. Tyr’s grandmother, on the other hand, was present and advised them to go lest Hymir’s wrath befall them. The gods took refuge in one of Hymir’s monstrous kettles after hearing this wise advice. When Hymir came, he shattered a pillar that was shielding Tyr and Thor. The gods were uncovered as the kettles were scattered in an instant. When Hymir saw the powerful Thor, he became terrified and ordered three oxen to be cooked for his visitors. Thor ate two and claimed he’d use the other as bait when he went fishing with Tyr the next day.
