Second Step — August 2013

Low cost complementary therapy available to second step service users (in a central Bristol location)

Second Step has been working with therapists linked with Wellbeing Rooms, a network of complementary health practitioners based in Hamilton House on Stokes Croft. Out of this period of development an exciting new project called ‘Community Conscious’ was formed, and is now bringing a range of com-plementary therapies to Second Step ser-vice users and staff!

Community Conscious is a non-profit organisation that offers a low cost therapeutic service to the beneficiaries of local charities and organisations in Bristol. Groups they are currently working with and intend to ac-cess include recently housed homeless people, young mothers, elderly citizens, re-covering addicts and adults with disabilities or learning difficulties. In essence, the project aims to bring greater physical and emotional wellbeing to those who would not/do not usually access complementary health care.

Since their inclusion in the last Step Ahead magazine, Community Conscious have run their first ever pilot with Second Step. Fourteen service users and support workers received a course of six complementary therapy sessions of their choice in Hamilton House. This is the testimonial from one client:

“I have been reminded and remember how good it is to ‘be’ in my body. I spend a lot of time in my head and thinking about what is going on in other people’s heads. Being in the body has enabled me to live better and exist in the present. I feel more able to cope and have faith in my ability to handle what the day brings. I hadn’t realised how powerful comple-mentary therapies can be in helping to ease emotional and mental discomfort. I will definitely be recommending it to oth-ers as a way of aiding recovery.” Second Step support worker

Following this success, Community Conscious will now be running a second pilot from 2 September — 14 October inclusive. This is your chance to find out how a holistic approach to health can benefit you. Work with addiction, manage your stress levels, improve your sleeping patterns — treat yourself!

There are five places available. The cost is £10 per session — that’s £40 for the whole programme. As part of this package you also get a free introduction taster session and an invitation to reflect on your experience at a closing event. We welcome applications from service users and support workers, although service users will be prioritised.

Therapies on offer are: holistic massage, aromatherapy massage, Indian head massage, deep tissue massage, Thai massage, shiatsu, reflexology, reiki, crystal healing, counselling and yoga.

How to Apply: You can collect an application form the Reception at 9 Brunswick Square, or ask your Support Worker for one, the forms should then be returned either by email, or by returning to the Reception by Wednesday 21 August 2013.

Other ongoing opportunities currently available through Community Conscious are a fort-nightly yoga class for Second Step service users and staff and the Support Worker Clinic:

All yoga classes run from Hamilton house at 5:45pm — 6:45pm on Mondays. The cost is £5/£6 (waged/unwaged). At present there are five places available per class. Wear loose clothing and bring a friend! July classes: 1/15/29, August classes: 12/26.

The Support Worker Clinic runs from Wellbeing Rooms, Hamilton House on Sundays 5pm — 9pm and Mondays 10am — 9pm. The cost is £25 per hour session and a proportion of the proceeds will subsidise the cost of treatments for vulnerable adults in our Low Cost Clinic.
