Hey Joe, thank you for the comment. I wouldn’t support the argument that a player should have the right to choose what team they want to play for. But I think if we take a closer look at the setup of the draft and contracts, you might agree with me that only in the extremely rare situation (for example if a player’s family is independently wealthy) would a HS player pass on the NBA after being picked so high. Here is why: First, the player would be passing on a guaranteed $20M contract (approx). Moreover, the real value in NBA player contracts is not a player’s first contract but his second. If the player goes to college for three years, they essentially miss out on being paid three years in their prime. For a max player (and trust me, agents will be telling them that they will be one), this could mean missing out on around $60M. All that being said, I doubt a player would realistically have this leverage except in rare instances.
