Five Tips For A Fresh Breath

Everyone suffers occasionally from bad breath. Bad breath is most commonly caused by conditions in your mouth, such as the food you eat, and how often you clean your teeth, gums and tongue.

Adjust your belt and Read our 5 tips on how to keep your breath fresh:

  1. Proper Brushing Technique

You already know brushing your teeth whisks away odors. But are you doing it correctly? The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day. It is important to brush all surfaces of the teeth, including the the gumline and inside portion of the teeth near the palate and tongue. To eliminate bad breath, spend time brushing the entire surface of your tongue where bad bacteria tend to linger the most after you brush the teeth and gumline.

Brush and floss your teeth after eating, if you possibly can. If you can’t do a thorough cleaning, drinking water or chewing sugar-free gum are good options.

2. Be aware that certain foods — such as garlic, onions and some spices — can contribute to bad breath for up to 72 hours after eating. After digestion, the proteins in these foods circulate in the bloodstream. They are carried into the lungs and are expelled in your breath until they exit your system.

“ Encourages the avoidance of sugary, sticky foods that linger on the teeth longer and are more difficult to remove ”.

3. Stimulate Saliva Production

A dry mouth can be the cause of halitosis. Try enjoying sugar-free chewing gum or hard candies to encourage saliva production. The American Dental Association points out that artificial saliva prescribed by your dentist can also be used to moisten the mouth and reduce bad breath.

Saliva inhibits the growth of bacteria that contribute to bad breath by cleansing the mouth and removing odor-causing food particles.

“ Dry mouth is also caused by some medications, alcohol and breathing with your mouth open. Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist ”.

4. Stop smoking!

Cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco can cause dry mouth and bad breath — on top of being harmful to your overall health. Read 7 tips to quit smoking.

5. Regularly Clean Dental Appliances

You can’t ignore proper oral hygiene just because you wear false teeth or a retainer. Dentures and partials require daily cleaning, just as natural teeth. Remove the dental appliances from your mouth to brush them to remove all food particles and plaque which can create bad breath.

“ You don’t have to suffer from bad breath any longer. By brushing twice daily with a clean toothbrush, maintaining ample saliva in your mouth, choosing food carefully and using other tips for bad breath control, you can keep your breath fresh and pleasant ”.
