And, I suppose, the need to note where she had gone reflects the lack of engagement — if he doesn’t make a written note of it, he’s certainly not going to remember anything as trivial as a ‘loved’ one’s activities … and he needs to do so in order to keep up the facade of actually caring about her.

Maybe I’m less dissatisfied with it than I was then.
Although …
Equally, someone like the protagonist might view either event … a business trip or his partner leaving him … with equal dispassion and, therefore, not bother to do more than note that she had left in either case — either she’ll be back, or she won’t … who cares where she went?
