I think there is a confusion here about what is really the preference.

If someone buys a lottery ticket rationally they prefer something like fun over money.

Or they may just be desperate … hoping against Hope, rather than deriving any pleasure from it; not rational at all, in fact — except insofar as it is rational to do something … anything at all … rather than nothing (or to assuage one’s crippling sense of hopelessness that prevents one from aking it through yet another day without hope).
