With the newly released Pokemon Sun and Moon game, we’ve got a new way to catch shiny Pokemon, and many new Pokemon — so I’ve compiled a list of the Top 10 Best Shiny Pokemon from the Sun and Moon Pokedex for all the shiny hunters out there.

#10 Toucannon

Toucannon vs. Shiny Toucannon

With Toucannon’s beautiful beak, the shiny version gives it a nighttime sunset feel, very appropriate. Toucannon is the third evolution form of Pikipek — which is probably the easiest Pokemon to find in the game especially in the beginning. Shiny hunting this one will be a breeze!

#9 Lycanroc (Midnight Form)

Lycanroc vs. Shiny Lycanroc

Lycanroc has to be one of my personal favourites (and the main reason why I chose Pokemon Moon!). Lycanroc from Pokemon Sun has a similar recolour of blue, but Lycanroc-Midnight has a much darker navy blue recolour. Alongside the navy blue, his pink eyes pop out from the rest of the dark colours, which makes this a must-have shiny Pokemon. You can find Lycanroc-Midnight (exclusive to Pokemon Moon) in Vast Poni Canyon (in the fourth island).

#8 Oricorio (Baile Style)

Oricorio (Baile Style) vs. Shiny Oricorio (Baile Style)

Oricorio, the dancer Pokemon of Alola! Comes in 4 different forms, but I think we definitely have a favourite among the shiny forms, which is the Baile Form. The only differences between this shiny and it’s original colours- the reds and blacks have been flipped! Creating a terrific stark difference between the original colouring. The shiny version of this Pokemon looks like it could be a badass dark type as well. The Baile form of Oricorio can be found on Ula’ula island in Ula’ula Meadow. You can also grab any other shiny Oricorio and change it’s form to Baile form by using Red Nectar that can be found in Ula’ula Meadow.

#7 Lurantis

Lurantis vs. Shiny Lurantis

Lurantis! The Mantis Pokemon, yes the original is a wonderfully pink and aquamarine combination of colours, the shiny one seems to be more of a traditionally green coloured Praying Mantis. I picked this one as number 7 because it’s such a nice difference of colour coordination. You can’t find Lurantis in the wild, instead you’ll need to find Fomantis either in Route 5 or in the Lush Jungle and evolve it into Lurantis at level 34 during the day.

Fomantis (Evolves into Lurantis, found in Lush Jungle)

#6 Jangmo-o

Jangmo-o vs. Shiny Jangmo-o

Jangmo-o has to be one of the cutest dragon-type Pokemon yet to be discovered in the Pokemon universe. It has a heart shaped scale on its forehead, in the shiny version it’s pink instead of yellow which adds to the cuteness factor. Its claws turn pink as well as the tips of its scales on the body and tail. You can find this lil’guy in the depths of Vast Poni Canyon.

#5 Sandygast

Sandygast vs. Shiny Sandygast

Now this Pokemon is a bit interesting. The Pokedex entries describe this Pokemon as:

“Born from a sand mound playfully built by a child, this Pokémon embodies the grudges of the departed.” in Pokemon Sun and “It takes control of anyone who puts a hand in its mouth. And so it adds to the accumulation of its sand-mound body.” In Pokemon Moon.

This ground and ghost-type Pokemon has definitely one of the creepiest origins, which is why it stands on my list as a solid number 5 on my shiny Pokemon list as the shiny Pokemon has a very stark dark colour scheme (kind of reminds me of a pile of ash!) compared to the light sandy scheme in the non-shiny version.

#4 Araquanid

Araquanid vs. Shiny Araquanid

Araquanid looks like it just landed out of the world of Invader Zim..

..like something Zim would invent… I think that association is what landed this guy in a number 4 spot. I love the red eyes and dark body combination in the shiny version as well, it looks a lot meaner than the non-shiny version! You can find Araquanid in Malie Garden.

#3 Tsareena

Tsareena vs. Shiny Tsareena

drumroll*
Make way for the Royalty! This gorgeous lady Pokemon is the third evolution form of Bounsweet (which can be found in Lush Jungle). She earned the number 3 spot in this list for a few reasons:

  • The beautiful violet foliage, it looks like her hair
  • The crown has turned more violet
  • The body has turned more of a yellow colour — really makes it pop from the purple!

All in all, this is a wonderful combination of colours, and the Pokemon itself is beautifully designed. Reminds me of Lurantis — another humanoid Pokemon earlier on this list. You can’t find Tsareena in the wild, you must evolve it from Bounsweet or Steenee.

#2 Mimikyu

Mimikyu vs. Shiny Mimikyu

Mimikyu the Disguise Pokemon. If you don’t know much about this Pokemon, it has probably been the most popular Pokemon in Sun and Moon ever since it’s appearance. It disguises itself as a Pikachu, a well known and loved Pokemon, to get closer to people. No one knows what lies beneath that disguise, anyone who has dared to look underneath it has died from shock.

Probably the most sad Pokemon origin I know, it’s so adorable though.. At least the disguise is. This one landed a number 2 spot because the shiny version looks very devoid of colour— maybe that’s how it feels?

You can find Mimikyu in the Thrifty Megamart, it’s super rare so if you don’t succeed in finding it the first few times, keep trying!

Some runner ups/honorable mentions:

(From Left to Right) Shiny Dhelmise, Shiny Vikavolt, Shiny Bruxish
(Above) Shiny Pyukumuku

#1 Salazzle

Salazzle vs. Shiny Salazzle

Salazzle, the toxic lizard Pokemon. One of the favourites of Team Skull and myself. The Normal and Shiny versions are Ying and Yangs, totally opposite from each other with the exception of the belly and eyes, which have stayed the same colours in both versions. You can’t find Salazzle from the wild, instead you must evolve it from a Female Salandit at level 33. You can find Salandits at Route 8 and Wela Volcano Park.

Happy hunting everyone!
