I know of at least two other authors who sell more through Smashwords than Amazon. Most, however, do in fact sell the most through Amazon. I’ve never understood why I sell more outside of Amazon but it’s been true for over a decade. Here are my top 7 selling sites:

Barnes & Noble (through Smashwords distribution)(ebooks)
Apple (through Smashwords distribution)
Amazon (ebooks & print)
Kobo (through Smashwords distribution)
Barnes & Noble (through CreateSpace distribution)(print editions)
Gumroad
Scribd (through Smashwords distribution)

The most glaring disparity between Amazon and Smashwords is in international sales outside of the U.S. About 98% to 99% of all my international sales have come through Smashwords distribution. I’ve only had a tiny handful of international sales through Amazon, all of which came from Canada. Through Smashwords distribution I’ve had sales in the UK, Canada, Ireland, Norway, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Australia, India, and Japan (and probably a couple others I can’t remember). International sales is one of the main reasons I’ve stuck with Smashwords.

I should point out that I’ve had very few sales from the actual Smashwords site. It’s mostly all come from who they distribute to.

Barnes & Noble and Apple have been neck and neck vying for my #1 spot. Apple used to be #1 until about two years ago when Barnes & Noble sales surged a bit and they’ve been #1 ever since. That is something that I absolutely cannot explain. (It does make me happy to see my pennies going somewhere other than Jeff Bezos’ pocket.)
