Hiring an Associate to grow our Montreal Venture Capital Team
We have come a long way since we launched White Star Capital three years ago and 2016 afforded us some phenomenal milestones in our portfolio. Our core focus from day one has been to find and support companies scaling from well-developed but under-served VC markets and supporting them to scale globally through our presence in London, New York and Montreal. Between the acquisition of Dollar Shave Club from Unilever for $1B, the large rounds raised by KeyMe ($40m) and Freshly ($21m), and the seven new companies added to our portfolio in 2016, we are thrilled to see what is next in 2017. Our portfolio companies now employ more than 1,000 people in 32 cities around the world, generating combined revenues of over $375m.
Our role in Canada has certainly evolved as we quickly built a brand as a leading early stage fund across the nation and kept affirming our excitement about the ecosystem. White Star Capital’s portfolio in Canada includes successful companies such as mnubo, IMMUNIO, Salesfloor, Drop and Busbud. As we continue to scale our operations, we are now seeking to add an Associate to our team in Montreal.
The opportunity is to provide support to the investment team and White Star’s Partners overseeing investment activities. The Associate will actively participate in surveying the market on the lookout for relevant investment opportunities, This aspect of the role will include financial modeling, due diligence, market assessments, vertical deep dives, competitive analysis and forming the team’s conviction around the investment. In addition, the Associate will play a key role in supporting the overall Fund operations, including portfolio monitoring, financial reporting and periodic reports to our own investors. Finally, the Associate will participate in generating dealflow and maintaining relationships with key players in the ecosystem.
Ultimately, this is a role where you’ll have to wear a lot of hats, with a wide range of tasks that differ on a daily basis but with a high level of both independence and mentorship.
You need to be comfortable with traveling to other tech hubs on a frequent basis, whether it is to meet entrepreneurs or to represent White Star Capital at industry events. We want someone who’s able to take initiatives, add something special to the firm from Day One regardless of his or her previous experience, and who thrives in an ambiguous environment. Strong affinity for technology and startups is a key requirement and an academic or applied technical background will be an asset to the role.
What we are looking for in a candidate:
- At least 2 years of experience working in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, management consulting, a startup, big tech company or related entrepreneurial experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the capability of taking initiatives, working autonomously, rolling up their sleeves and getting the job done
- Passion for new technologies and learning emerging business models
- Financial modeling capability and presentation skills
- Excellent organizational skills with a “self-starter” mentality and a strong attention to detail
- An existing network in the Toronto/Waterloo tech ecosystem
- Bilingual (English/French) is a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering or related fields. CFA, MSc, or technical graduate from a top-tier university
