Cambodia, You Say?

I’m working with an organization called IVHQ. I applied to be a childcare worker instead I’m teaching English with “The New Hope for Orphans”. As I’m sure you’re aware it kind of works that way here ;)

I’m based in Siem Reap but my placement is a good 40 minute Tuk Tuk ride from the volunteer house.

Your project sounds like it was challenging but rewarding? I would love to hear more about it, especially given the history here.

Yes, I’ve heard the beaches are stunning! After I finish my placement I will be making my way around. I’ve not yet seen the temples, beaches, mountains or floating villages ☹ all on my list! First week here. Still finding my feet.

This is the most challenging country I have visited so far. It’s beautiful, it’s dangerous, it’s just so different.

Attempting to learn the basics in Khmer as I struggle with the younger kids in class. So often they speak to me and I have no idea what they’re trying to say. The next door neighbours here are helping me with my Khmer. So many funny stories re: communication problems.

Given your background with volunteer projects I would absolutely love any advice you can provide regarding Cambodia and volunteering in general. I seem to be fighting myself a bit. Westerner mindset and all.
