Why UC Berkeley Absolutely Should Have a White Student Union

A person goes to a club and the bouncer lets them in before anyone else. There’s no one but them and their friends so they get a round of drinks — or two, or three or more — until they’ve had plenty. And then other people start getting let in to the club (not even everyone and not all at once and with a list of requirements) and they try to start ordering drinks. Then, with four rounds of drinks under their belt already, the first people in start getting upset that somebody else is finally being allowed in, and being served drinks.

As a white, straight, cisgender male from an upper-middle class family in one of the richest countries on Earth, I have always found groups formed solely for the purpose of promoting, defending or ‘improving’ the rights of white people to be basically the above situation. Like, what are you doing, white people with a white rights group? White people already have plenty of drinks already and as reductive as the analogy is, I’d rather just see fellow privileged white people helping to make sure everyone is in metaphorical club.

It was a little too much to hope that, when I began reading this article, the ‘White Student Union’ was actually an ironic group that somehow furthered the above cause.
