Dr. Carol L. Shields to Deliver Gradle Lecture at 2017 PAAO Congress

The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) has announced the 31st Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology, which will be held this year in Lima, Peru, in association with the Peruvian Society of Ophthalmology. A tradition that dates back to 1940, the congress offers a valuable opportunity for ophthalmologists from across North, Central, and South America to connect with each other and to share the latest news and practices in their field.

Since 1948, a highlight of the congress has been the Gradle Lecture, which was established in memory of PAAO co-founder Dr. Harry S. Gradle and is delivered at each event by a leading advocate and exemplary practitioner in the field of ophthalmology. This year’s Gradle Lecture will be given by Carol L. Shields, MD, a professor at Philadelphia’s Thomas Jefferson University and a co-director of the Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital. Dr. Shields’ lecture will focus on some of the most recent advancements in the management of uveal melanoma, or melanoma of the eye, including the development of personal prognostications based on patients’ individual cytogenetic profiles, and the status of new systemic and local therapies.

The 31st Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology will take place August 9–12, 2017. Registration closes on June 30.
