I suggest the author google “Brother Johnathan.” The write-up on Atlas Oscura is fairly indicative, and even includes a rather nativist and partisan author to add admiring spice. Early America was made up of ornery bastards who were out for gold and free land, no matter who died getting in the way, period. This is, sadly, a large chunk of “true” America, which was taken by surprise in the span of a few short decades in the mid 20th century by the rise of a strong and complex federal government. Central government is normal everywhere else, but the “hands off my stash, nobody tells me nothing” crowd in the US see it as horrendous tyranny. No matter the place would today be overrun by its superior enemies if these dolts had their way, clueless Americans think a log cabin and a rifle are enough to make a modern country. The US will be the first empire to end by falling off a bar stool, drunk and self-absorbed with personal issues. US democracy: from much discussed, to much disgust.
