This is a good article — and I’m glad to see it addressing the often overlooked issue of environmental racism. You don’t see these pipelines or compressor stations going through white and rich areas. Yet somehow, whether it is in a city, a town in the middle of Virginia, or at Standing Rock, minority and less affluent communities have to deal with the excesses of corporate greed. And this is all in addition to the significant detrimental environmental impact of the pipeline, and the fact that property rights are being thrown aside to do this (Remember Red).
It’s a race issue, it’s a class issue, it’s a property rights issue, it’s a money in politics issue, and it’s an environmental issue. Any single one of those should be enough cause to stop the pipelines.
