The Penguin Joke
One of my favorite jokes (brought to you by Christine Graves)
The Penguin Joke
Many years ago, I discovered the Prarie Home Companion on NPR. I would often use talk radio when I was driving to help me stay focused. PHC was an old-time style radio show with various sketches and running gags. One joke that kept coming back was the Penguin Joke.
Two penguins are sitting on an ice floe. One looks at the other and says, “It looks like you’re wearing a tuxedo.”
The other one looks back and says, “Who says I’m not?”
What I love most about this joke is the amount of time that you have to invest in setting up the story contrasted against the lackluster punch line. I love the look on a listener’s face when they realize the joke is over.
It is also fun to imagine a penguin in a tuxedo. I’m not sure how you would tell the difference.
This story was inspired by the August Word-A-Day list from Christine Graves. Sorry if the post is a couple of days early, but I was inspired. I also needed to get more writing done this month.
