The name of the book:

The author expected the readers to know all the details about the Old Testaments he quoted in the letters, so most likely the audience is made up Jewish Christians, and that’s where the name of the book comes from

Background and purpose of writing:

To encourage church in persecution:

first by showing Jesus is superior than anyone and anything, and is worthy of all their trust and devotion,

second by challenging audience to remain faithful to Jesus despite persecution.

The theme of the book:

Rejecting Jesus is foolish because he’s so awesome!

Four main components of the book:

  1. Hebrews 1–2: Comparing Jesus with angels and Torah
  2. Hebrews 3–4: Comparing Jesus with Moses and the Promised land
  3. Hebrews 5–7: Comparing Jesus with priests and Melchizedek
  4. Hebrews 8–10: Comparing Jesus with sacrifices and covenant
