I’m from Baton Rouge and my daughter, sister and niece lost everything.

The water came up so fast it was hard to pack an extra pair of underwear much less pictures, jewelry and memories. As my family and very close friends threw everything they owned in the yards they all had to stop and cry when they saw everything was ruined. But that can all be replaced.

One of my son’s friends and my friend lost her mom in the flood. She drove into a ditch by accident and drowned. This is the real heartbreak.

We are only about 30 minutes north of New Orleans but couldn’t and haven’t been back to Baton Rouge where most of our high school friends lost everything because my husband is fighting cancer. He has a rare skin cancer that is very aggressive. We were sent directly to New Orleans so the surgeon could spend 8 hrs on his face to get the cancer. He couldn’t get it all so he sent us to Tulane.

We were told immediately that the cancer would take his life, but Dr Friedlander was going to remove as much of his left side of his face as he could without harming his eyes etc. He did another 8 hr surgery then the plastic surgeon took over and pulled the skin from his chest up to the top of his temple on his face. His left side of his face is paralyzed but other than that he looks amazing. Other doctors look at the job Dr Asylam did and are amazed. Once he healed he stared chemo and radiation. They have done all they can now and the rest is up to God and how long we are given. He lost 60 lbs in 7 weeks and once the treatments stopped they couldn’t get enough fluids in him or keep his blood pressure up enough to go home from the hospital. Thank God we made it tho and in October we will do a full body scan to see what is left and what is gone.

So, I guess what this long story is about is that our days are simple and our money is gone. His social Sec will finally come in a few weeks and hopefully we can make ends meet.

We are both 63 yrs old and worked hard all of our lives. The hardest job I’ve ever had is the one I have now as a caregiver. I never knew what my mom went through with my dad when he had cancer. I thought I did but I didn’t. This job is 24/7 and worth every minute because when he doesn’t know where he is, and he’s an electrical engineer that graduated from LSU, I need to be there to answer his questions and tell him the journey he has been on.

To top it off the week before the surgery he had a stroke but has recovered almost completely. All of his life he has wanted to write a book and at this point he is just beginning to be mentally able to write his story. I’m grateful someone showed me how to journal daily to allow our friends and family know how he was doing bc now he has a daily report to fill in so many blanks he has.

Thank you for helping my beloved Baton Rouge and it would be my husbands dream to meet Mr Patterson or any of the LSU former football team. Jimmy gets butterflies on Friday nights ready for LSU football as most of Louisiana does. And when true heroes like Mr Patterson comes to town we are all happy.

LSU and Baton Rouge are so very dear to our hearts here in Louisiana. It’s hard to understand until you are there on a Saturday with thousands and thousands of fans that have been there since Friday and won’t leave till Sunday to eat, drink and love our Tigers. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

Please thank everyone again for what they are doing. Good luck and God bless.
