One of Sergei Prokofiev’s more enduring operatic pieces is the Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet. This has been used in many places — as a tune in commercials, sound track in some TV series and so on, particularly where the intent is to stir the audience. This is indeed a thunderous piece and for many of the products of the 40s and the 50s, who have been hearing this for decades, reminiscent of the grey moods of the Soviet era.
The English Premier League Football team, Sunderland, who play at home at the Stadium of Light, use this as a theme score before every match to stir themselves up for the ensuing duel…..and perhaps unnerve their opponents as well. Such is the evocative power of this piece. Evgeny Kissin, the Russian classical pianist, plays this piece with so much thunder and power, doing full justice to the composition. Right from the opening bars, Evgeny stuns with his fearless playing.
I was listening to this last week, sipping a 2005 Brunello di Montalcino from the Machiavelli estate in Montalcino in Tuscany, Italy. Like this music, the wine overwhelms you from the start. Like this piece here, this wine has power.
Good music tugs at the heart strings. Good wine pleases like few drinks can.Combine the two…and you have a soul uplifting moment. Seen such a duet in action ? Share it with others and sway the world.
