A serious underlying problem is the sheer centralisation of search and social media/messaging. It goes against the principles on which the web was conceived and offers a central.point of control. Surely distributed search and social media would be a better fit; even as part of the www infrastructure, like DNS. There are some very ingenious ways of achieving this, with some nice implementations such as YaCy and Faroo for search, Diaspora for social media and WebRTC and Secure Scuttlebutt as interesting technologies for messaging, amongst other things.
