Welcome to Wombo’s first official blog post. It’s great to be here among Medium’s community.
Our project, Wombo.gg, is a skill-based platform for eSports enthusiasts who can compete online against each other and win real money in the process. We launched less than two months ago, in late October, and have been growing ever since.
It’s still pretty amazing to see how your idea turns into reality and this is what is happening with us right now. So please, join us on our journey to building the most amazing competitive hub for gaming fanatics worldwide.
Our team consists of huge eSports fans. Before we started Wombo we have been involved in multiple projects such as running or managing teams, hosting LAN events and online competition. We even have some eSports “journalistic” background. Combined, there’s almost 20 years of experience inside the industry between the people responsible for our growth.
We were always extremely competitive. Playing multiplayer games was something that made us happy. Winning obviously was the goal, but having respect for our team mates and opponents was as important as the trophies.
Over the years we saw multiple projects grow based on the eSports phenomenon bubble; we never wanted to run our platform this way. We are interested in creating a safe and secure environment for players like ourselves.
Our goal from the get-go was to create a hub for players who love the competition, love the excitement and want to feel like those professional players they aspire to be. And because we couldn’t find anything like this, we’ve started working on Wombo.
We’ve brainstormed ideas for a few months. Had to figure out which features are a must-have and which can be omitted. Which games should be available for the players worldwide at first, and which could we add later.
We decided that Hearthstone and Counter Strike: Global Offensive will be our first pick. However, picking games was easy and fun. The hard part was to create the platform itself.
Our main goal when designing Wombo was that we want to keep it extremely simple. The sooner a player can start competing the better. We wanted to limit the number of clicks one has to make to get from registration to playing.
Currently, after multiple iterations we are definitely closer to achieving our goal than we were five months ago. But there’s still a long road ahead of us.
In terms of gameplay experience, Hearthstone was simple to implement. We just had to make it available on the platform. But CSGO was a different story.
We decided that we will soft launch without an automatic system for CSGO server hosting for each game created. There were multiple reasons behind this decision, but one of them was that our team had to focus on other tasks which would make the platform more complete as a whole.
After just eight weeks we know that it was a mistake. Luckily enough, it’s easily fixable and our IT department is working on the new update which is going to introduce full server automation very soon.
Thus far we have seen support from multiple famous streamers. For instance, Noxious had some “good” times on our platform.
We are working with multiple Internet personalities and are constantly growing our network. We are also looking for new sponsorship opportunities, so if you’re a streamer and/or Team Manager, feel free to reach us at support@wombo.gg. We’re eager to work with amazing people in the upcoming year!
We are currently considering which games should be added to Wombo’s roster in 2016. Maybe you guys have some suggestions?
