Are you a rock? Then get moving!

Tick. Tick. Tick.
Tick. Tick.
Tick.
Okay, now it’s glaring at me. The blank piece of paper.
It’s actually emanating waves of malice at me, because I can’t squeeze words out of my eyeballs and onto the page right now.
So what did I do?
I closed my eyes and listened. And heard the clock.
And wrote down what it said to me.
Because writers write, even when the words won’t come.
Sitting there and waiting for inspiration to strike will lead to starvation and cramp. Probably not in that order.
But just getting on with it gets you started.
This goes for anything in business or in life: sitting there worrying about getting started is always far worse than actually getting started, because we have this magnificent ability to build up little hitches into giant horrific mountains that look totally overwhelming.
Then, when we grit our teeth and just start, we realise they’re not giant horrific mountains after all.
They’re just little bumps we can step over.
Once you’ve got started, once you’ve written the word “tick”, it’s like rolling downhill. You pick up momentum, tock follows tick, and suddenly you have something to write about.
See?
What are you putting off starting? Hit reply and tell me. Maybe you just need me to give you a virtual kick up the arse…
Or maybe you could sign up to my 49 Ideas and get a whole lot more than just a kick up the arse.
