Why do I have to get gussied up to get better service?

I don’t usually wear makeup. I feel like my skin suffocates under a veil of cosmetics. But, I also get stingy with my time and I typically don’t bother with the five minutes it takes to do it. Ditto for blowdrying my hair. Unless I am skating out the door into a subzero day, my hair will air dry. I work from home most days and this is not a problem.

I am lucky to have clear, even-toned skin and thick light-bodied hair. But, I also have sparse eyelashes and eyebrows and pale lips. I know a bit of makeup — a touch of concealer, some powder, a swipe of mascara, a bit of eyebrow filler and a little lip color — gives my face pop and enhances my features.

I also know, I am generally invisible to the world when I don’t bother with putting on my face or smoothing out my hair. Then again, I am a middle-aged woman, so according to most media, invisibility is par for the course.

But, when I do bother, I suddenly exist; people see me.

Today, I met friends for lunch. A new and expensive restaurant that normally only opens for dinner, was offering a pre-fixe lunch on Thursdays and Fridays during the holidays. The restaurant has a “resort casual”…
