All Men Are Rapists? Male Anxiety and Rape Culture

I am sometimes surprised to learn that I, as a feminist, believe all men are rapists. This slogan is regularly, and falsely, attributed to feminists who include Andrea Dworkin, Catherine MacKinnon and Susan Brownmiller. In fact, the origin of the term is a work of fiction — a novel by Marilyn French — and, with the exception of a few radical feminists on the extreme fringe (whose thinking, perhaps, was galvanised by the myth itself), it is within the realm of fiction that the idea exists. Yet the belief that feminists consider all men to be rapists has a tenacious attraction that suggests a deeper purpose.
