long gone days looks amazing. here’s why…

when I booted up long gone days, I thought to myself, eh another JRPG. I mean, the quality was great! and I was immediately met with a beautiful cut seen and crisp pixel art, but nothing stood out.

the tutorial ended and I was in the lift on the way to my first mission. I’ll admit, I was tense. it started and I was met with a sniping mission, It was easy. too easy. there was a stark contrast between this and the fights of the tutorial. though my mind didn’t have time to process this because before long I was chasing a spy through the town. All I could think of was “yeah yeah. just a scripted event to get me caught!” but when I got him…

it’s justa kid. everything I assumed was wrong. just a kid. I thought this would play into something. the commander shoots him. all you can do is walk away.

Okay, here is why that entire sequence was brilliant.

  1. it preys on your nature of assuming it’s a trap to hit you harder.
  2. after, it’s said the whole village was like this kid causing the moment to mean a whole lot more.
  3. that is made better due to it’s difference in game play to the tutorial (witch at this point was all the combat-game play we had seen.)
  4. after, you can only go back through the level. making you feel like all you can do is walk away instead of going forward.

other than that, great graphics. difficult fighting. good but repetitive music. a lack of choice I think may be the game’s biggest downfall and good characters.

This is great design that I hope gets used more in the game. and if that’s used in it’s “ focus on language and cultural barriers” it could have some very insightful and thought provoking things to say about the nature of war and human interaction. And because of that I really can’t wait to see more.

quote taken from their twitter bio, video taken form their website everything else was me. find them @lgdays and me Flare. I’m intending to do more blogging soon so stay tuned
