The Central Dalmatian islands of Lastovo are intriguing because they are an island municipality, meaning they have got their own government and administration despite being a part of Croatia. This municipality consists of forty-six islands, the biggest of which shares the name Lastovo, as does the biggest settlement on said island, where most of the authorities are located. Lastovo has a relatively small population of just under eight hundred people, mostly living in the town of Lastovo.
There is great accommodation and restaurants, as well as free internet connection in nearly all settlements. Like other islands on the Mediterranean, Lastovo has a rich and interesting past, some of which is visible to this day. It has passed through the hands of Illyria, Rome, France, Italy and Yugoslavia before getting the freedom we know today, each leaving behind numerous monuments and buildings that to this day stand as witnesses of the times that were.
Every year, the famous traditional Poklad festival is held here. Poklad is a carnival held in the winter, in the beginning of the new year, and it lasts about a month. It is full of singing, dancing, and traditional food and activities.
The islands’ specific Mediterranean nature and water make fishing and hunting popular amongst visitors, but the most popular physical activities are snorkeling, windsurfing, biking, and cliff jumping. The wonderful hidden beaches and mysterious underwater are well worth exploring, just as the abandoned houses and relaxing pine forests.
Rocky and pebble beaches dominate the islands, even though, if you look, you can find sandy beaches and lagoons too. Lastovo is often referred to as “The Island of the Crystal Stars”, for its clear skies that give a unique insight to the wonders of our universe.
