Handmade carpets are woven in three techniques- Handknotted, Handtufted, and Flat-woven. Hand-knotted carpets are woven using knots and piles, Hand-tufted rug is also known as a cut-pile rug and in flat-woven, it doesn’t contain piles and knots and that why it is very thin. Weaving a rug using hand-tufted technique is a modern style. Hand tufted carpets are made in pure New Zealand wool and in Indian wool as well. This is also called natural material. A hand-tufted rug is completed in 6 steps. It takes less time to weave as compare to hand-knotted rug. The process of a hand-knotted area rug hand-tufted rug is same but the construction technique is different. I am going to explain you the entire process of making a handtufted rug-

  1. Spinning using Chakra Machine- When unprocessed New Zealand wool comes in factory, it is separated by hand to break up the clumps and remove any other unwanted material that may have got stuck in it. In this step, the raw material of wool is turned into yarn using chakra machine. Chakra Machine is operated by hand.

2) Vegetable Dying: A handmade carpet is woven using vegetable wet dyeing method and sometimes it is also called a natural dying process. Dying solution is heated to a near-boiling temperature for a specific period of time after that weavers put washed yarn into the dye solution according to the output color.

3) Hand-tufted Manufacturing: — Before starting the weaving process, a designer draws the design on a white paper and a graph is created. After that, weaver adjusts handloom according to the size of the carpet. Maximum three people work together in a single handloom. First, they stitch the cotton cloth as a frame on the loom which is called primary cloth and then draw a design on it. When CAD is ready then they start weaving using a gun machine. Gun machine is used for inserting wool material into the frame according to the design. When the weaving process is completed, they add the second cloth as secondary for adding strength and durability to the carpet. There is no pile that’s why hand tufted carpets do not contain fringes and also called cut-pile carpet.

4) Finishing or trimming the carpet: — After completing the weaving process, they finally check that if any threads are coming out or any color mismatching occurs and do final finishing. For this process, weavers use Scissors for cutting extra piles and pencil colors for removing the color cuts.

5) Rug washing: — In the weaving process, carpets get dirty and that’s why before sending the carpet to client, they open the rug on the floor and wash it with detergent and warm water.

6) Final Touch: — This is the rechecking process before delivery of the carpet. If anything is required then finishing touches are given.

After completing the 6 processes a hand-tufted carpet is ready to sell or use.
