What is an E-Cigarette?

An electronic cigarette, also known as an E-Cig or personal vaporizer, is a battery-powered device, which produces effects that are similar to tobacco smoking. E-cigarettes produce vapor as opposed to actual cigarette. While they are used to mimic the smoking experience, it is important to remember that they still contain nicotine and other harmful chemicals.

While manufacturers claim that these products are a safe alternative to conventional cigarettes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has questioned the safety of these products. A preliminary test by the FDA revealed the presence of diethylene glycol, a chemical that is found in antifreeze. They also found harmful carcinogens or cancer-causing substances in the liquid in E-cigs that is vaporized and inhaled by those who use them.

Side Effects of E-Cigs

The side effects of E-cigarettes could range from mild or moderate to severe. Here are just some of the side effects consumers have reported after using these products:

  • Headache
  • Breathing problems
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Pneumonia
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure
  • Disorientation

Who Regulates E-Cigarettes?

The FDA is in the process of regulating e-cigarettes. In April 2014, the FDA started looking into regulations that would ban sales of these products to people under 18 and require warning labels about the presence of nicotine and other harmful chemicals. There is no question that manufacturers are marketing these products to young people with appealing flavors such as cherry, cotton candy and bubble gum. It is important that all states make stringent regulations when it comes to being able to sell E-cigarettes to young people. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that the number of American children as young as the 6th and 8th grade who have tried e-cigarettes doubled from 2011 to 2012, from 3.3 percent to 6.8 percent.
