Xarelto Named One of the Most Dangerous Pharmaceutical Drugs in the U.S.
Popular blood thinner, Xarelto, has been ranked among the 50 most dangerous drugs in the U.S. The research website, HealthGrove.com, looked at the 150 drugs that are involved in the highest number of adverse reactions and ranked them by the percentage of serious reactions. HealthGrove did this using data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for 2004 through 2015. Xarelto (generic name, rivaroxaban) was 24th on the list of the 50 most dangerous prescription drugs that have the potential to cause the most serious health effects. Xarelto ranked 24th with 81 percent of reactions (a total of 33,317), which is considered serious.
How Does Xarelto Work?
Xarelto is manufactured by Bayer but marketed by Johnson and Johnson’s subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals. It is a prescription blood thinner and one of the first “direct Xa inhibitor” drugs taken orally. Its creators claim that Xarelto is safer and more convenient than older blood thinners or anticoagulants such as Warfarin because it does not require monthly monitoring for heightened bleeding risk. Xarelto received FDA approval in 2011 and is used for the prevention of strokes in patients who have an irregular heart rhythm issue called atrial fibrillation. It is also widely used to treat and prevent blood clots including those that travel to the lungs called pulmonary embolism, which could prove fatal. Xarelto is also used to prevent blood clots in patients who have recently undergone hip or knee replacement surgeries.
What Are The Dangers of Xarelto?
The biggest danger of Xarelto is uncontrollable bleeding that could result in death. When patients take the drug, its effects last for 8 to 12 hours a day. What this means is that if the patient suffers a serious bleeding event, the drug may continue to prevent normal clotting for hours. There is no antidote yet to reverse the process, while the effects of drugs such as Warfarin may be reversed with Vitamin K. Some of the most serious side effects of Xarelto include blood clots, gastrointestinal bleeding, spinal bleeding, bleeding in the brain, epidural bleeding and stroke. FDA reports show that blood clots account for nearly half of the adverse events involving Xarelto.
Numerous product liability and wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer of Xarelto. Several studies published in scientific journals have also shown a link between Xarelto and uncontrolled bleeding and even a heightened risk of blood clots, the very condition this blood thinner is supposed to prevent. Pharmaceutical companies have a legal obligation to manufacture drugs that are safe for consumers and warn patients when severe side effects can be expected.
