“I’m just average.”

“There’s really nothing special about me.”

“I’ll never reach my potential.”

“I should be further along in life.”

“I have no friends.”

“I’m not doing enough for God.”

These words used to play over and over in my mind, and sometimes they still do. The enemy is raging war against our thoughts and whispering lies into our minds. And, they can feel so close to the truth that we end up believing they are true.

My dark thoughts, and the lies I believed, brought me to a place where I never thought I’d find myself. I felt trapped. It was a personal prison that I allowed, and it isolated me from others. I believed the lie that I was alone.

I think many people who struggle with negative thoughts find themselves in the same situation. And, if we’re not careful, we can confine ourselves to this place. From the outside, we might look normal. We might try to smile, be strong, and fit in — while, on the inside we are worried, hurting, frightened, and fragile.

But we do not have to stay that way.

One of the most powerful things I learned during this dark time was how important it is to bring negative thoughts out of the darkness and into the light. The enemy works in darkness, and it is in this atmosphere where lies and deception grow the most. However, when we bring our thoughts and lies to the light, they begin to lose their power.

How did I do this? I began to write down my thoughts — to get them out of my head and onto paper. Now that I had them in front of me, I could do the next thing: replace those lies with powerful truths.

If believing lies keeps us in pain and darkness, then believing truth is the key that sets us free.

Jesus is the Truth, and a relationship with Him is the only way we will ever know true freedom. He has given us weapons in this battle for our minds, and the number one weapon is the Word of God. There’s a reason it’s called the sword of the Spirit. It is there for us to pick up and do battle against the lies of the enemy.

How did I replace the lies I believed with the truth? Using God’s Word, I searched for and found Scriptures that countered each of the lies I wrote down. Think of these Scriptures as individual keys that unlock the chains of your negative thoughts. When these powerful truths transform your thinking, you will walk this life with a confident identity that is firmly grounded and unstoppable.

Are you ready to do this? Here are a few to get you started:

Lie: I’ll never amount to anything.
Truth: “‘For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11

Lie: I’m damaged because of my past.
Truth: “He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’” Revelation 21:5

Lie: No one could ever love me.
Truth: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” Jeremiah 31:3

Lie: I’m a failure.
Truth: “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Romans 8:37

When you know and believe the truth about who you are, it will radically transform your thinking and change your life. I know, because it changed mine.
