The Design Feedback Loop: Imagined Ends in a Critical Thinking World

Designers possess an insatiable curiosity about the world around them and how it works. One of our greatest strengths is the ability to see the possibilities in everything. But this can put us at odds with other parts of our organizations. When a deadline looms and we’re at the tail end of a project, suggesting a new approach is rarely welcomed. More often than not, we can face backlash from our team. The goods news is that these two worlds can be reconciled. We can let our inquisitive minds explore possibilities while at the same time adhering to structure.

By employing tactics like taking control of project debriefs, selling the outcome and not the deliverable, and using effectual reasoning, designers can build trust with their teams while at the same time helping them to see design as a driver for progress, not a distractor.
