Fungus — Visual Scripting Tool
Fungus is a Unity plugin that allows designers to create story games for free and with almost no coding what so ever. For the game “At a cafe with your best friend” we will be using Fungus to create a series of text based storytelling through the use of flowcharts, so that the player can interact and converse with their best friend.
To use Fungus, simply head over to the asset store in Unity and download the free plugin, import all the assets and wait for them to compile.

To begin using flowcharts, simply locate the newly added tab “Tools” at the top of unity. Go to Fungus > Flowchart Window and voila!A flowchart window should have just been added to your scene. Drag and drop that window where you fell is best and you’re halfway there.

Now in the newly created flowcharts window, right click and select “Add Block”. Once done, a new yellow box should appear Called “New Block 1”. These blocks are completely customisable through the insecotr once selected and are capable of offering a multidue of different functions. Be they, audio, animation, text, UI and more.
For this blog, I’ll be demonstrating how to create a simple Say narrative text box that I used in my cafe game.

With the text box highlighted, jump into the inspector and select the “+” i con do bring up a list of functions, scroll down to Narrative > Say. This should create a parameters box in the inspector that allows you to begin writing in the Story Text box.
You can create multiple instance of text by simply repeating the process above on the same yellow Text Box.

You can also change the way the text box behaves when interacting with the when the game is running. Simply check off the parameter depicted here to change the display and appearance of these text boxes. each Say component can be customized in many unique ways.
And that’s literally all there is to it. Fungus is a very powerful and user friendly tool that allows anyone to pick up and use effectively. I highly recommend checking out their tutorial videos and their training course to get a even stronger understanding of all the basic functionality Fungus has to offer.
