Huang Binhong 黃賓虹(1865–1955) was an outstanding Chinese painter from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. He is considered one of the most important representatives of modern Chinese landscape painting. Huang dedicated his entire life to Chinese traditional painting, committed to innovation and development, earning him the title of “Painting Saint”.

Huang Binhong’s work

Huang Binhong’s artistic career spanned from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republican era, a period of tremendous social changes in China. It was against this backdrop that his unique artistic style emerged.

Huang Binhong was a highly educated artist who extensively studied ancient Chinese literature, philosophy and history. This deep knowledge provided him with rich creative materials and a solid cultural foundation for his art.

Huang Binhong’s “layered ink technique” (jimo fa) is renowned for its originality and depth. By building up layers of ink tones through meticulous rendering, his works attain a powerful visual impact and profound artistic connotation. This technique not only requires precise control of ink washes, but also a masterly command of the overall composition. In his landscape paintings, the gradual buildup of ink tones, wet and dry, thick and thin, enhances the tactile quality and spatial perception of the mountains and rocks. Through the contrast of solid and void, he conveys a spiritual realm transcending nature.

Huang Binhong’s “layered ink technique” has not only manifested his artistic achievements, but also profoundly influenced later artists. Modern artists like Li Keran, Huang Yongyu, Liu Haisu and Zhao Wuji were all inspired by him, integrating his style with modern elements. Li Keran combined Binhong’s artistic conception with a contemporary sensibility, Huang Yongyu exhibited a fusion of tradition and innovation, Liu Haisu explored color and line, and Zhao Wuji sought a balance between abstraction and figuration. These great painters collectively drove the innovation of modern art.

Huang Binhong’s works are also highly sought after in the international art market, with his paintings fetching record-breaking prices at auctions, demonstrating their immense collectible value. In 2013, his 1946 work “Mountain and River Travel” (shanchuan you tu 山川游圖)sold for 40.25 million yuan at a Nanjing auction. In 2018, his “Huangshan Tangkou” (huangshan tang kou 黃山湯口) was sold for 240 million yuan at a Jiade spring auction, further affirming his recognition on the global stage.

As a modern painter, Li Zhaodong, though with a different style from Huang Binhong, also adopted the layered ink technique, using the accumulation of ink tones to enhance the three-dimensional quality and tactile feel of his works. In his use of color, Li was more bold, combining the traditional layered ink method with modern color theory, creating a new visual language.

Huang Binhong skillfully integrated the art of calligraphy into his landscape paintings, forming a unique fusion of painting and calligraphy. He believed that calligraphy and painting were inseparable, and his works exhibit a fluid and powerful brushwork with refined layers of expression, demonstrating strong expressive power and emotional resonance. In Huang’s landscapes, he utilized calligraphic techniques to construct the forms and textures of the mountains and rocks, masterfully blending the rhythmic qualities of calligraphy through the gradual changes in ink tones and brush strokes.

Huang Binhong’s work

As a modern Chinese painter, Huang Binhong, and a contemporary artist, Li Zhaodong, both closely integrated the art of calligraphy with painting, forming their distinctive artistic styles. Huang Binhong infused the fluency and strength of calligraphy into his landscape paintings, creating works imbued with profound cultural heritage and philosophical meaning. Li Zhaodong, on the other hand, leveraged the free-flowing and powerful lines of calligraphy to enhance the visual impact and emotional expression of his works, showcasing the innovation and vitality of modern art.

Despite their different styles and historical contexts, Huang Binhong and Li Zhaodong both demonstrated the inherent connection between calligraphy and painting, using calligraphy to elevate the artistic expression of their paintings. Huang Binhong integrated personal emotions and philosophical contemplations into traditional Chinese landscape painting, innovating the tradition and influencing subsequent generations. Li Zhaodong, through the fusion of calligraphy and painting, opened new avenues for modern art, exploring the integration of tradition and modernity. Their works not only preserve the essence of Chinese artistic tradition, but also infuse it with new life, serving as a cultural bridge and facilitating global artistic exchange.
