The reason I disagree with you about monuments is that tearing them down creates so much acrimony and inflames tensions of all sorts. I understand you personally don’t care very much about monuments (frankly, I don’t either), but monuments are one way in which people participate in a shared public life and shared history. This is why I much prefer the solution of erecting new monuments alongside the old ones to reflect our present-day approaches to issues upon which we previously had different views.
