When you have the power to do great things, you also have the power to do a lot of bad things. Someone who lives in a tribal society can do both good and evil things on a very small scale, but with technological advancement comes the capacity to influence events on a larger and larger scale. You can send a man to the moon, but you can also send A-bombs flying over cities full of millions of people. This is both the blessing and curse of the West. We experienced the Enlightenment and the industrial revolution earlier, so we also achieved greater things, both good and bad. Unfortunately, there are many people around now who only want to stress all the bad stuff the West did without acknowledging any of the good. That’s what I’m fulminating against in the article.
