Riot Games announced that they’re phasing out Summoner Names for League of Legends. Starting on November 20, 2023, Riot Games will be phasing out Summoner Names for League of Legends players. They will be moving all League of Legends player IDs exclusively to Riot IDs.
Riot Games stated that they’re doing this to make a more unified experience across all of their titles. Furthermore, they stated that their goal is to make players feel more connected to their Riot IDs.
Why though?
In a brief explanation, Riot Games explains that League of Legends’ lore has changed over the years. Originally, League of Legends players were Summoners who summoned the first roster of champions onto Summoner’s Rift. These summoners were mediators of conflict throughout the original lore of Runeterra. However, as League of Legends’ champion roster expanded, the whole lore behind of Summoners limited lore progression. As a result, in 2014, Riot started shifting the focus of Runeterra’s lore away from the summoners and onto the champions themselves.
This upcoming update aims to better align players with the current lore of League of Legends. Also, it seeks to streamline the way names work within Riot’s Games from a technical standpoint.
How this affects players
For the most part, players don’t have to do anything. All current League of Legends players already have a Riot ID assigned to them. However, for those who wish to know or change their Riot ID, they can do so here.
After logging onto the site, players can see their Riot ID listed at the top. This is also where they can perform changes to their Riot IDs.
League of Legends players can also find out their Riot ID by hovering over their profile icon in the League client.
Updates to Riot ID changes
Riot will also be making changes to how frequently players can change their Riot IDs. After the Riot ID change goes live, each player will only be allowed to change their ID every 365 days. Players who wish to change their name more often will have to pay a fee. Approximately, additional name changes will cost $10 USD in in-game currency.
All players will get a free name change after the update on November 20. Additionally, Riot will offer a couple more free name changes in the coming months to ease the transition.
